Specially Adapted Homes for Disabled Veterans – Grants from the Veterans Administration

Severely disabled veterans or service members may be entitled to a home especially adapted to their needs. Grants are available from the Veterans Administration to assist in either building a new specially adapted home or in purchasing an existing home to modify and remodel to meet their disability-related requirements.

The grants from the VA may be approved for:

    ·         50 percent of the cost of building, buying, or remodeling adapted homes or paying off those homes already acquired, up to a maximum of $50,000.

    ·         The actual cost, up to a maximum of $10,000, for adaptations to a veteran’s residence or acquisition of a residence that has already been adapted with special features for the veteran’s particular disability.

    ·         A guaranteed loan or a direct loan from the VA to supplement the grant to acquire a specially adapted home.

    ·         Temporary Residence Adaptation Grant providing assistance to veterans who are temporarily residing in a home owned by a family member. The grant would assist the veteran in adapting the family member's home to meet the veteran's special needs.
